Lignin makes wood rigid and resistant to decay. It’s what gives that nice brown color to some woods. Lignin makes up around 20 – 30% of the dry weight of wood.

Additives in Furniture Boards

Now, not all furniture boards are just pure wood. There are often additives to improve certain properties.

Adhesives

One of the most common additives is adhesives. In particle boards and plywood, adhesives are used to bind the wood particles or veneers together. The most widely used adhesives are urea – formaldehyde (UF) and phenol – formaldehyde (PF).

Urea – formaldehyde adhesives are cheap and easy to use. They cure quickly and give the board good strength. But the downside is that they can release formaldehyde gas over time. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and high levels of it can be harmful to your health. That’s why there are strict regulations on the amount of formaldehyde that can be released from furniture boards.

Phenol – formaldehyde adhesives, on the other hand, are more expensive but have better water resistance and durability. They also release much less formaldehyde compared to UF adhesives. They’re often used in outdoor or high – humidity applications.

Preservatives

Preservatives are used to protect the furniture board from fungi, insects, and other pests. Copper – based preservatives are quite common. Copper is toxic to many fungi and insects, so it helps extend the lifespan of the board.

There are also borate – based preservatives. Borates work by disrupting the metabolic processes of pests. They’re a bit more environmentally friendly compared to some other types of preservatives, and they don’t stain the wood as much.

Fire Retardants

In some cases, fire retardants are added to furniture boards. These chemicals work by either preventing the ignition of the board or slowing down the spread of fire.

One common type of fire retardant is ammonium phosphate. It decomposes when heated and releases water vapor and ammonia, which can cool the fire and dilute the oxygen around it. Another type is borax, which also works by releasing water and forming a protective layer on the surface of the board.

Different Types of Furniture Boards and Their Compositions

Particle Board

Particle board is made from wood particles, usually from sawmill waste or small pieces of wood. These particles are mixed with an adhesive, typically urea – formaldehyde, and then pressed and heated to form a board.

The wood particles make up the bulk of the board. The adhesive binds them together, and depending on the manufacturer, there might also be some additives like preservatives or fire retardants. Particle board is relatively cheap and easy to manufacture, but it’s not as strong as some other types of boards.

Plywood

Plywood is made by gluing together thin layers of wood veneer. The veneers are usually arranged with their grain directions perpendicular to each other, which gives plywood its strength and stability.

The veneers are made from different wood species, and the adhesive used to bond them can be either urea – formaldehyde for interior use or phenol – formaldehyde for exterior use. Sometimes, a small amount of wax can be added to improve the board’s water resistance.

Medium – Density Fiberboard (MDF)

MDF is made from wood fibers that are broken down into a pulp. These fibers are then mixed with an adhesive, usually urea – formaldehyde, and formed into a mat. The mat is then pressed and heated to create the board.

MDF has a more uniform density compared to particle board, which makes it easier to work with and gives it a smoother surface. It can also be cut and shaped more easily, which is why it’s popular for furniture making and cabinetry.

Why Knowing the Composition Matters

As a consumer, knowing the chemical composition of furniture boards is super important. If you have health concerns, you might want to avoid boards that use high – formaldehyde – emitting adhesives.
