How it works is that the PCB is dipped into a molten solder bath. Then, hot air is blasted across the surface to level the solder and remove any excess. The result is a layer of solder on the copper traces which is easy to solder components onto.
But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. HASL has some drawbacks. The surface is a bit uneven, which can be an issue for fine – pitch components. And when it comes to transparent PCBs, the solder layer might reduce the transparency slightly.
ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold)
ENIG is another popular choice. It’s a multi – layer finish where first, a layer of electroless nickel is deposited on the copper, followed by a thin layer of immersion gold.
This finish looks great on transparent PCBs. The gold surface is super smooth and shiny, which doesn’t compromise the transparency too much. It also offers excellent corrosion resistance and is really good for soldering fine – pitch components.

If you’re on a tight budget and your application doesn’t require extremely fine – pitch components, HASL might be the way to go. It’s a tried – and – true option that gets the job done.
For high – end projects where reliability and fine – pitch soldering are crucial, ENIG is a top choice. Yes, it’s more expensive, but you’re paying for quality.
If you need good electrical conductivity and a smooth finish without breaking the bank, immersion silver could be a great option, as long as you can address the tarnishing issue.
Immersion tin is a good pick for lead – free and environmentally friendly projects, but you’ll need to take steps to prevent tin whiskers.
